It was touch and go start to the game with the Quokkas struggling to pull numbers together to get the game going. Ami had a big night, Nathan was missed, and we had Geelong Gareth filling in with a bit of a drive on his hands. I received advice to ’elect to bat’ if we get the choice to give our team ample time. Alas, the Curtin were in a worse state than us with their skipper Brandon letting me know that they were slowly pulling in. They started with their batting innings and were generous to assist us with an 11th fielder.

The bowling order was determined on the fly with Dusty (to the best of my recollection) getting us rolling. Sizzle was in fine form securing our first wicket with a catch 10m in from the straight boundary with durry mid-drag safely transported throughout the phases (TBC: durry in hand, thongs on feet, sliding on both knees to get to the ball - UNBELIEVABLE). One huge 6 hit ended up caught by our 12th man wedged between a few branches high up in a gum, new ball was required. Dusty picked up his second wicket in as many overs thanks to F1’s trusty hands (you see he missed an easy catch earlier in the day and had let the team down quite badly). Ice came on for his second over and got a wicket cleanly bowled. Two other catches in our innings were caught by a Curtin fill in, Evo, and one sitter by me. Sizzle continued his fine form with a c&b on his first ball of the final over, this time durry-less. 202 was their score and so 203 became our target (8 runs needed per over).

The forever legend Slug made a trip early in the Curtin’s innings out to get some ice to fix a makeshift chilly bin from his shopping trolley. Thanks, mate. We had the best of Curtin’s wursts for lunch and used an automatic generator to determine the batting order. Poor all rounder fill-in Gareth (our second keeper to replace Fargo when he had a bowl) was up to open alongside TBC.

Gareth suited the position very well with three boundaries and the support from TBC but was out in the third over. I came on next and loved my ever-brief relationship with bat and ball. Ice came on and was clean bowled for a duck but that wasn’t the last we’d see of him. Sizzle came next, then Rev, then Dusty, then Ed, F1, Fargo, and Ice for his revenge. F1 was our sole retiree with comedic timing coming off with one over to go and 14 runs needed, Ice and Fargo were our guys. A lot of fun watching those final overs but end up falling short with a valiant effort in true Quokkas style with 197.

A brilliant day with amazing spirit all round. Carn the mighty Quokkas!!!
